A former neighbor alerted the authorities about Jamie Varley, a convicted murderer, who attempted to set fire to her children’s toys by throwing lit cigarettes at them. Varley, aged 37, is currently serving a whole-life order for the brutal murder and sexual abuse of his adopted 13-month-old son, Preston Davey. Preston was placed in Varley’s care at nine months old and suffered severe physical, sexual, and emotional abuse.
Tragically, on July 27, 2023, Preston was subjected to two sexual assaults by Varley, a former secondary school teacher, leading to his untimely death. Varley’s former partner, John McGowan-Fazakerley, was sentenced to 25 years for his role in the abuse and murder.
Months after Varley’s conviction, a former neighbor shared her harrowing experiences living next to him. She described reporting Varley to the authorities for anti-social behavior and criminal damage, including throwing lit cigarettes at her children’s toys in an attempt to set them ablaze, causing her immense fear for her children’s safety.
The neighbor expressed relief when Varley’s family moved out in 2014, highlighting her concerns about his behavior and expressing disbelief at his past role as a teacher. Troubling details emerged about Varley’s actions before Preston’s tragic death, including an incident where he allegedly injured himself while spying on a suspected unfaithful partner.
Following his sentencing at Preston Crown Court, Varley was added to the list of dangerous offenders sentenced to life in prison, joining notorious individuals like Wayne Couzens, Levi Bellfield, and Jeremy Bamber.
Preston, born to convicted murderer Sarah Davey, was taken into care shortly after his birth and later adopted by Varley and McGowan-Fazakerley. Preston endured escalating abuse at the hands of Varley, with his partner turning a blind eye. The toddler suffered a fatal joint attack by the pair on July 23, 2023, leading to his tragic death on July 27.
