A community uproar has ensued as locals rally to preserve the future of a 125-year-old bowls club facing displacement to make room for a new café section. Members of the Mitres Bowls Club in Norwich express their distress over being instructed to vacate the premises they have cherished for over a century. The club, situated adjacent to St Thomas Church, is compelled to relocate as its Church of England landlord intends to convert the bowling green into an outdoor café and versatile community area.

Vice-president Neville Warnes, 63, lamented the decision, stating it has deeply saddened members. He emphasized the sentimental value of the club, noting that it holds memories beyond just bowling matches. Neville questioned the motives behind the eviction, asserting that the move appears driven by financial interests rather than community welfare.

Established in 1896 and later relocated to its present site in 1901, the club, which boasts approximately 70 members, faces displacement as East Church aims to redevelop the green space for an outdoor extension linked to the adjacent Mitre café. The proposed changes have sparked frustration among members, including Julie Rust, 66, the club’s first female member, who criticized the redundancy of the new café plans.

Treasurer Annette Warnes, 58, expressed disappointment in the handling of the eviction process, highlighting the lack of community engagement from the church. David Hart, 60, a recent club joiner, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the missed opportunity for both the bowling and wider communities.

Members are actively appealing to the Bishop of Norwich in their fight to save the club. A church spokesperson defended the decision, emphasizing the community-driven intentions behind the café expansion project. Despite the impending closure, assurances have been given to support the club during its final season.
