Colorful “lego-like” houses under construction on the Kent coast have caused a stir among locals in Greatstone, near New Romney. The new homes, inspired by traditional beach huts, feature pastel shades that are quite different from what was initially expected when planning permission was secured by Folkestone and Hythe District Council in 2021.
Originally, the design of the homes was more subdued, but after the site was sold in 2023, new owners obtained approval for revised plans. These updated plans included the use of blue, pink, yellow, and green metal panels on parts of the exterior, although no new images of the revised plans were released.
Residents like Lee Dryden, who moved to Greatstone with his wife three years ago, are unhappy with the homes, describing them as “horrendous.” Dryden expressed disappointment, stating that had he known the homes would look like this, he would have objected, as they do not blend well with the surrounding area.
Residents have likened the homes, situated on former council-owned wasteland in Coast Drive, to Lego blocks. Clare Chapman, a behavior analyst, remarked that the homes resemble “containers” and expressed surprise at the vibrant multicolored exterior.
Despite mixed reactions from the community, construction is progressing, and the homes are expected to be completed within the next four weeks. Anthony Ralph, co-founder of TG Designer Homes, defended the unique design, emphasizing the company’s commitment to creating distinctive and modern properties.
FHDC stated that the color scheme changes were minor and would not negatively impact the visual appeal of the neighborhood. Originally intended as holiday lets, the detached properties are now being transformed into standard homes, featuring modern amenities and spacious layouts.
Overall, the new homes have sparked debate among locals, with some appreciating the fresh approach to design, while others remain critical of the unconventional appearance.
