Authorities seized over 100,000 live cockroaches from a single breeder known as the ‘cockroach kingpin’, in what is believed to be one of the largest confiscations of exotic invertebrates ever recorded. The collection contained Madagascar hissing cockroaches and Dubia cockroaches with an estimated worth of 200,000 Australian dollars (£106,000). The interception took place in May in Bathurst, New South Wales, Australia. The Madagascar hissing cockroach, measuring between 5 to 8 centimeters in length, is notably one of the largest species of its kind.

In comparison to the typical Australian cockroach, which usually grows to lengths of 2.3 to 3.6 centimeters, the exotic species confiscated were considerably larger. Images released by the authorities depicted one of the shiny, brown invertebrates that exceeded the size of a person’s finger.

The breeder likely intended to sell the larger exotic cockroaches as a cost-effective reptile food due to their size requiring fewer insects for feeding. Bathurst snake catcher Stefanie Lesser highlighted the importance of using crickets or wood roaches as alternative feed for lizards. She cautioned that if the exotic cockroaches escaped and carried diseases, they could potentially devastate the local cricket population in Australia, affecting various wildlife that feed on insects.

A statement emphasized the risks associated with exotic cockroaches, mentioning their potential to spread diseases and harm native wildlife. Importing, keeping, breeding, or selling Madagascar hissing and Dubia cockroaches in Australia is illegal, regardless of how they were obtained.

Australia’s stringent biosecurity measures aim to safeguard its agriculture, horticulture sectors, and indigenous wildlife from pest threats. Smugglers caught with undeclared or illegal animal, insect, or plant materials could face substantial fines. While the breeder was not charged, the seized cockroaches would be euthanized, with officials indicating a readiness to prosecute those found in possession of such invertebrates.

A spokesperson from the DCCEEW issued a stern warning to pet businesses and owners involved in the illicit breeding and trading of exotic cockroaches, emphasizing that violating federal laws by possessing, breeding, or trading such species could lead to severe penalties.
