A residence in central California was discovered with a charred body following a wildfire outbreak, where officials suspect a chainsaw triggered the deadly inferno. Authorities disclosed on August 6 that the fire likely originated from sparks emitted by a chainsaw, leading to the arrest of an individual connected to the incident.

Herbert Wayne Smith, aged 65, was apprehended on Wednesday in relation to the fire incident. Smith is under suspicion of negligently causing the fire that occurred on Monday. In an interview with KCRA-TV, Smith mentioned that while cutting scrap wood with a chainsaw, the fire was inadvertently ignited.

Expressing remorse, Smith stated, “I’m deeply sorry for all the events that transpired. This situation will have significant repercussions on my life.” The wildfire has obliterated seven constructions and consumed over 15 square miles (39 square km) of woodland in the Sierra Nevada foothills of Calaveras County.

Authorities believe that the fire was initiated due to the improper use of equipment capable of producing sparks without adequately clearing flammable vegetation, as mandated by the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The decision to pursue criminal charges will be left to prosecutors.

Investigations are ongoing to ascertain if the fire played a role in the fatality discovered within a burnt dwelling in the vicinity.
