Serita Thurton netted two goals in the first half as the bottom-ranked Calgary Wild clinched a 4-3 victory over the top-seeded Ottawa Rapid in Northern Super League action at McMahon Stadium on Saturday.
Kahli Johnson opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, followed by Thurton extending the lead to 2-0 around 13 minutes later.
Ottawa’s Jung Min-Young found the back of the net in the 38th minute, and Melanie Forbes equalized 2-2 just before the end of the first half.
Thurton secured her second goal just before halftime, propelling the Wild to victory. Jorian Baucom also contributed a goal for the Wild, who now have a record of two wins, 12 losses, and two draws.
Jyllissa Harris converted a penalty in the 86th minute for the Rapid, who now stand at 10 wins, three losses, and three draws. This loss ended Ottawa’s 10-game unbeaten streak.
Despite the Rapid having 54% possession, they were outshot by the Wild 16-13 (with 9 shots on target to Ottawa’s 6).
Calgary took six out of the 11 corners in the game, while Ottawa received one yellow card and one red card.
In another match, Jessica De Filippo scored in the 57th minute to level the game and then netted a second goal five minutes into stoppage time, leading the Vancouver Rise to a 2-1 victory over the Halifax Tides at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.
Jordyn Rhodes had scored in the 19th minute to give the fourth-placed Tides a 1-0 advantage.
The fifth-placed Rise dominated possession with 56% and outshot the visitors 18-13, including 6-4 on target.
Halifax took four out of the six corners, while Vancouver received two of the three yellow cards issued during the game.
