A family in County Durham had a startling awakening when a bus crashed into their property, prompting the homeowners to rush to the aid of the driver in need.

Claire Read, 41, was just beginning her day around 9:30 am on Sunday when a loud noise caught her attention. Looking outside, she discovered that a Go North East bus had plowed through the wall of her home on Hilltop in Stanley, causing significant damage to the area where her sons usually play.

Upon hearing cries for help, Claire and her husband Peter quickly went outside and realized the driver required immediate assistance. The bus, which had approximately ten passengers on board, had deviated off Chester Road East, allegedly running through traffic lights and colliding with a traffic island before ending up in the family’s garden.

Describing the chaotic scene, Claire recounted the terrifying moment when the bus crashed into their property, causing substantial damage. Emergency services swiftly arrived, with firefighters aiding in extracting the driver from the bus. One individual was transported to University Hospital North Durham, although it remains unconfirmed if this person was the driver.

Despite the significant damage caused to their home, Claire expressed her primary concern for the well-being of those involved. She emphasized the importance of lives over material possessions, acknowledging the potential dangers had her children been outside during the incident.

A statement from the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service detailed their response to the road traffic collision involving the bus and the driver’s suspected medical episode. Fire crews, alongside ambulance and police personnel, provided assistance at the scene before concluding their operation.

Reflecting on the morning’s events, Claire remained composed, recognizing the unpredictability of such occurrences. While the property damage was extensive, she focused on the fortunate outcome of no severe injuries, underscoring the value of safety above all else.
