The family of an American man who was manipulated into taking his own life during an online video call has commended a British individual for helping uncover the truth. Dylan Phelan, aged 21 and from Morley, West Yorkshire, was part of an online group that pressured Travis Dyer, also 21, to commit suicide in Louisiana in October 2024. Phelan confessed to encouraging suicide, creating an indecent image, and possessing extreme pornography, resulting in a sentence of six years and four months in prison.

During the lead-up to his suicide, Dyer had etched Phelan’s name into his body. On October 24, 2024, Dyer, while on a video call with Phelan and two others named Mads and Rob, was repeatedly encouraged by Phelan to pull the trigger, culminating in his tragic act.

Phelan retained a recording of the suicide on his computer, later disclosing the event to a female acquaintance who, appalled by the revelation, informed Phelan’s mother. Subsequently, Phelan’s parents took him to Elland Road police station in Leeds in March, where he confessed his involvement in Dyer’s death.

In court, it was revealed that Phelan engaged with an online community on the messaging app Discord, where discussions about mental health took place, although not in a supportive capacity. Authorities found indecent images and extreme pornography on Phelan’s electronic devices.

During sentencing at Leeds Crown Court, Mr. Justice Cotter noted that Phelan’s actions stemmed from morbid curiosity and emphasized that Dyer, who was grappling with mental health issues, required assistance and compassion. The judge criticized Phelan for his lack of regard for Dyer’s life, highlighting his desire for control over another person’s actions.

Dyer’s family submitted a Victim Personal Statement to the court, lauding an English woman for her efforts in uncovering the truth. They condemned the group mentality that turned the online space into a hostile environment, acknowledging that Dyer did find solace in a genuine online friendship with an individual from England.

The judge urged individuals with information about the other participants in the joint enterprise to reach out to US authorities, particularly highlighting a person who posed a significant threat to vulnerable individuals online. He underscored the need for accountability and vigilance in preventing such tragedies in the future.
