British Columbia’s forests minister announced the end of the provincewide state of emergency triggered by wildfires, emphasizing that the wildfire risk persists despite the termination of the emergency declaration. The state of emergency was initially declared on August 8 following the evacuation of numerous residents in the Summerland area due to the Bald Range wildfire. Although the emergency was extended on August 21, Forests Minister Ravi Parmar stated during a press briefing in Summerland that the emergency measures were no longer deemed necessary at this time. He cautioned that the wildfire season is ongoing with many days and weeks ahead, highlighting the increasing intensity and duration of fire seasons.

Parmar urged tourists to return to the Okanagan region to support local businesses in their recovery efforts, emphasizing the importance of community solidarity in aiding those affected by the wildfires. He encouraged visitors to patronize local establishments, purchase products from British Columbia, and contribute to the local economy by staying in hotels and spending money in the area.

Additionally, the B.C. Wildfire Service disclosed that the ban on offroad vehicles in various parts of the province would be lifted, set to expire on Friday at noon PT. The decision to lift the ban was attributed to improved conditions in certain regions and the forecast of cooler and wetter weather. The Wildfire Service affirmed that they would continue to monitor wildfire risks closely and adjust prohibitions as conditions evolve.

Previously, on August 10, the province had imposed a ban on recreational offroad vehicle use on Crown land within the Kamloops Fire Centre, Southeast Fire Centre, as well as portions of the Cariboo and Coastal fire centres. The resumption of offroad vehicle access aligns with the improving weather conditions and the ongoing assessment of wildfire risks.

The latest developments mark progress in the wildfire response efforts and signal a shift towards recovery and restoration in the affected regions.
