A well-known brand is making a shift to monochrome packaging as a result of supply chain disruptions related to the ongoing tensions involving Iran and the US. The company announced that 14 of its products will be impacted, with the new packaging design utilizing only two ink colors.
The updated black-and-white packaging will be seen on various products, including Calbee Potato Chips, shrimp-flavored Kappa Ebisen snacks, and Frugra granola. The company stated that these changes are a response to the supply chain challenges caused by the current situation in the Middle East.
The decision to transition to monochrome packaging is aimed at ensuring a consistent supply of products amidst the supply chain disturbances. The shortage of naphtha, a key ingredient in printing ink derived from petroleum, has been exacerbated by the blocked Strait of Hormuz during the conflict.
With Japan heavily reliant on Middle Eastern oil for around 40% of its naphtha needs, the revised packaging is set to debut in stores starting May 25. The conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran reportedly initiated on February 28 this year.
Following attacks by the US and Israel, Iran responded by blocking most international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to spikes in oil and gas prices. The strait serves as a critical route for approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil supply, causing significant disruptions in global energy markets.
Regarding the packaging adjustments, Calbee reassured customers that the updated packaging will contain the same familiar products. They emphasized that the changes only apply to a limited product range and will not impact product quality. Calbee pledged to adapt swiftly to external challenges, including geopolitical risks, to ensure a consistent supply of safe and high-quality products, seeking continued support and understanding from consumers.
