An 11-year-old boy underwent emergency surgery and had his left leg amputated following a shark attack near the Brazilian city of Recife. The incident occurred off the coast of Jaboatao dos Guararapes. The boy’s uncle, Aldemir Jose, recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the attack while at the beach with his nephew and daughter. The uncle rushed into the water upon hearing screams and found his nephew in distress, pleading not to let him die.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported the injured boy to a nearby hospital. The initial reports indicated that the shark had bitten the child on the left hand and hip, resulting in the amputation of his left leg. The attack took place at Praia da Piedade, a beach known for shark sightings, with warning signs posted for public safety.

Danise Alves, from the State Committee for Monitoring Shark Incidents, highlighted the restricted bathing areas in Jaboatao, emphasizing the need to adhere to safety measures to prevent such incidents. This recent attack marked the third shark incident in Pernambuco this year, with previous attacks occurring in January. Over the past 34 years, the state has recorded a total of 83 shark attacks, leading to 27 fatalities.
