Long queues have formed at the Port of Dover due to IT issues at the French border, causing delays for travelers trying to reach their destinations before Christmas. Images from the port depict a scene of vehicles at a standstill, with one traveler describing the situation as “absolute chaos.”

The Port of Dover has reported that tourist traffic is now flowing smoothly through Border Control, with no queues in the Buffer Zone. However, there are minor queues at the Check-in plaza, and TAP procedures are still in place for freight traffic.

Latest traffic updates from the Port of Dover indicate that processing time is approximately 30 minutes in the Buffer Zone, with approach roads gradually clearing up. The check-in plaza is operating smoothly for all three ferry operators.

An estimated 30,000 cars are expected to pass through Dover over the weekend, contributing to the traffic congestion. Similar queues have been observed on the M20 near Folkestone as drivers make their way to the Eurotunnel.

In response to the heavy traffic at the docks, bus company Stagecoach has announced that services to Eastern Docks are currently disrupted. The port has advised all port-bound traffic to stick to main roads to facilitate the movement of the Dover community during festive events and Christmas shopping.

A frustrated driver shared their experience on social media, expressing dismay at the chaotic situation at the Port of Dover. Port of Dover’s chief executive, Doug Bannister, acknowledged ongoing IT issues causing delays and assured that efforts are being made to address the situation with partner agencies.

The IT problems affecting French border control systems are also impacting Eurotunnel customers, with waiting times of 60 minutes for freight and 30 minutes for cars at the Folkestone terminal due to high demand. Eurotunnel has temporarily suspended freight check-in operations due to system issues and is working to resolve them promptly.

As the holiday traffic reaches its peak, disruptions at the French border control are compounding challenges for travelers using the Eurotunnel.
