BBC co-commentator Steve Cram has urged Winter Olympic officials to address the Canadian curling team regarding their use of inappropriate language. The Canadians handed Team GB a significant defeat with a 9-5 victory.
Brad Jacobs’ team has been at the center of controversy in Milan and Cortina. The BBC had to issue an apology after Canada’s Marc Kennedy engaged in a profanity-laced exchange with Swedish player Oskar Eriksson earlier in the competition.
Kennedy also faced allegations of violating rules during Canada’s win over Sweden, prompting World Curling to issue a statement clarifying the regulations. Despite this, the BBC commentary team once again criticized the Canadians’ language.
During a break in the match on Tuesday, the Canadians were heard using profanities while TV cameras were nearby, causing disapproval from Cram and co-commentator Logan Gray.
Following one Canadian team member’s explicit comment after scoring a point, Cram expressed irritation, stating that it was unacceptable. Cram emphasized the need for the Canadians to be reprimanded, with Gray commenting on their inappropriate language.
At that moment, Canada had taken a 3-1 lead after the third end. The outcome was critical, as Mouat’s team had potential points, but Jacobs’ side successfully scored a point.
While not in the public eye, Mouat’s team might now be feeling frustrated. Despite leading Team GB to a silver medal in the 2022 Games, the loss to Canada has made their path to the semi-finals challenging.
After a defeat against Norway in their last round-robin match, GB’s match against Canada became even more crucial. Securing victories against both Canada and the USA is imperative for GB to secure a spot in Thursday’s semi-final.
Even a win against the USA may not be sufficient for GB to advance to the semi-finals. They may need favorable outcomes in other matches to keep their hopes alive for competing in the semi-finals later in the week.
