Two ambulance service workers have been taken into custody in connection with an investigation into six fatalities in Wiltshire, according to authorities.
Wiltshire Police disclosed that a man in his 30s from the western part of the county was apprehended on suspicion of six counts of gross negligence manslaughter and four counts of ill-treatment or neglect by a care provider. Additionally, a 59-year-old woman was detained on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. Both individuals have been granted bail.
The inquiry was initiated in 2023. Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, from the Major Crime Investigation Team at Wiltshire Police, confirmed the ongoing major investigation into several adult deaths in and around Wiltshire. He mentioned that detailed investigations have been conducted since the initial report to the police in 2023.
“In June 2024, a man in his 30s from West Wiltshire was arrested on suspicion of six counts of gross negligence manslaughter and four counts of ill-treatment or neglect by a care provider. Additionally, in March of this year, a 59-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. Both suspects have been released on bail pending further investigation,” stated Walker.
The police are prioritizing support for the bereaved families and urge the media to respect their privacy during this challenging period. Notably, both individuals were employed by the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust.
A representative of the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust stated, “Upon becoming aware of any concerns, the trust promptly launched an internal inquiry which led to a swift police referral. We have cooperated closely with the authorities throughout the ongoing investigation.”
“Following the suspension of two staff members, they were immediately relieved of all responsibilities, including patient care. We want to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident with no ongoing jeopardy to patients. In a life-threatening emergency, please continue to dial 999.”
“One of the suspended individuals is no longer part of the trust’s workforce. Due to the active investigation, we will refrain from making further statements at this time.”
