During Christmas dinner, many people overlook the small items on the plate, but my personal favorite is the humble pigs in blankets. A recent survey by YouGov revealed that traditional Christmas foods like turkey, stuffing, and sprouts are popular choices on December 25. Despite the variety available, most people tend to stick to the classics when it comes to holiday meal essentials.
As a budget-conscious shopper, I decided to compare standard fresh packs of pigs in blankets from Aldi and Lidl, each offering 12 pieces for £1.99. Visiting both stores on December 16, I found the products had similar appearances, but one brand stood out as the clear winner for my Christmas feast.
Opting for earlier shopping can secure better expiration dates before the festive meal. I cooked both brands in an air fryer, following the recommended cooking instructions. The Lidl sausages produced more grease due to the bacon wrapping, with varying levels of doneness possibly influenced by the cooking method.
The Lidl sausages had a decent flavor, but the bacon was overly salty for my taste. In contrast, the Aldi sausages were plump, flavorful, and had a perfectly crispy bacon coating. These sausages maintained their size and offered a delightful eating experience, making them a cost-effective choice for enhancing the Christmas dinner spread.
With their good taste and affordable price, Aldi’s pigs in blankets are a great option for those looking to stretch their Christmas dinner budget. Additionally, their longer shelf life compared to Lidl’s product allows for early shopping and a stress-free holiday shopping experience. In my opinion, these pigs in blankets from Aldi are among the best I’ve had in a while.
