Alberta’s opposition leader has expressed concerns about the timing of a referendum on separation from Canada amid ongoing trade tensions with the United States. NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi has urged Premier Danielle Smith to either cancel or postpone the referendum, citing the need for national unity during the trade dispute.

Scheduled for October 19, the provincial referendum includes a question on initiating the legal process for a future binding vote on Alberta’s separation from Canada. Nenshi emphasized the importance of presenting a united front with Canada as trade tensions with the U.S. escalate.

In response to Nenshi’s comments, Premier Smith reiterated that the referendum would proceed as planned due to the significant public support it has garnered through petitions. She emphasized the importance of gauging Albertans’ desires through the upcoming vote, despite her personal stance in favor of remaining part of Canada.

Meanwhile, Parti Quebecois Leader Paul St-Pierre Plamondon in Quebec has indicated that a promised separation referendum would be delayed until the end of U.S. President Donald Trump’s term if his party wins the upcoming election. St-Pierre Plamondon expressed concerns about potential disruptions caused by the unpredictable nature of the Trump administration.

The Alberta NDP has accused Premier Smith of using the separatist vote to appease hardline factions within her party rather than addressing genuine concerns of Albertans. Nenshi highlighted the contrast between the motivations behind the Alberta referendum and the historical separatist sentiments in Quebec.

Ahead of the referendum, advocacy campaigns from both pro- and anti-separation groups have intensified, with notable figures like former premiers Rachel Notley and Jason Kenney joining forces to advocate for Alberta to remain part of Canada. Despite their past political differences, Notley and Kenney are united in promoting the benefits of Alberta’s continued Confederation membership.
