Hayden Panettiere, known for her roles in hit TV shows like “Heroes” and “Nashville,” has passed away at the age of 36. The sad news was confirmed by her father, Skip, in a statement released to ABC News and The Guardian on Sunday.
The statement described Hayden as a shining light and a powerful presence who brought immense love and joy to those who knew her personally and to her countless fans. The cause of her death has not been disclosed, and her publicist has not responded to inquiries from The Associated Press and CBC News.
Beginning her career as a child actor in commercials and soap operas, Panettiere rose to fame in 2006 with her role as a cheerleader with superpowers in “Heroes,” a series known for the catchphrase “Save the cheerleader, save the world.”
Speaking about her experience on “Heroes,” Panettiere expressed her belief that the show’s appeal stemmed from its blend of reality and sci-fi elements, resonating with viewers of all ages through relatable human stories.
She later garnered three Teen Choice Awards for her role in “Heroes” and received a Grammy Award nomination for a children’s spoken word album. Panettiere’s success continued with her portrayal of a country singer in “Nashville,” where she showcased her singing talent, earning two supporting actress Golden Globe nominations.
Tragically, Panettiere’s younger brother, Jansen, also an actor, passed away in 2023 due to a heart condition at the age of 28. The actress had been candid about her battles with alcohol addiction and depression, particularly following the birth of her daughter in 2014 with former boxer Wladimir Klitschko.
In an interview, Panettiere addressed misconceptions about her custody arrangement for her daughter, explaining that her decision for her daughter to live with Klitschko in Ukraine was made during a challenging period of mental health struggles and addiction.
Despite her personal challenges, Panettiere’s career continued to flourish with appearances in various films and TV shows, including the “Scream” movies, “I Love You Beth Cooper,” and “Remember the Titans.” She had fondly spoken about her role in “Remember the Titans,” feeling a connection to her character, Sheryl Yoast, the spirited daughter of a football coach.
Hayden Panettiere’s passing marks a significant loss in the entertainment industry, leaving behind a legacy of talent and resilience that will be remembered by her fans and peers alike.
