Canada’s Lu Dort and Nickeil Alexander-Walker shone in Quebec City as they led their team to a thrilling 97-92 victory over Argentina in the FIBA men’s basketball World Cup 2027 Americas Qualifier on Monday night. The game saw over 13,000 fans packed into the Videotron Centre.

Canada, ranked fifth globally, remains undefeated in eight games and is set to face Uruguay in their next match on November 26 before a rematch against Argentina three days later. The top three teams from the two American groups will secure spots in the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar, with the best fourth-place finisher also earning a ticket to Doha.

While Argentina’s Nicolas Laprovittola impressed with 31 points, the team fell short, with only Nicolas Brussino reaching double-digit scoring with 11 points.

Dort, a Montreal native, stole the show, scoring the first points of the game with a three-pointer and setting the tone for Canada. Despite an early lead by Canada, Argentina fought back and dominated the first quarter, leading 29-23. Argentina extended their lead to 17 points early in the second quarter before Canada rallied, cutting the deficit to 53-48 at halftime.

Canada’s head coach Gordie Herbert praised his team’s resilience, stating, “We put ourselves behind the eight ball. The important thing was to cut the lead to single digits before halftime, and credit to our players, that’s what they did.”

A rejuvenated Canadian team emerged in the third quarter, outscoring Argentina 25-16, led by veteran Kelly Olynyk’s strong performance under the basket. In the final quarter, Alexander-Walker took charge, guiding Canada to victory.

Dort, playing his first game since the NBA playoffs, admitted to feeling rusty initially but regained his form as the game progressed. He commented, “I haven’t played a competitive game since the [NBA] playoffs, but I took care of my health this summer and felt ready to go.”

The game showcased a fierce battle between the two teams, with Canada ultimately emerging victorious in a hard-fought contest.
