Stellantis and Volkswagen, leading players in Europe’s auto industry, showcased their confidence in electric vehicles at the Paris auto show. Drawing inspiration from Chinese competitors and partners shaping the local market, both companies are revamping strategies to counter the increasing competition.
Stellantis, a French-Italian auto giant with renowned brands like Citroen, Peugeot, Opel, and Fiat, is leveraging partnerships with Leapmotor and Dongfeng to understand the technological advancements driving Chinese competitiveness. Stellantis’ CEO, Antonio Filosa, highlighted the importance of collaboration to enhance capabilities and learn from each other.
In a bid to comply with “Made in Europe” regulations, Stellantis has forged production partnerships with Leapmotor and plans to establish one with Dongfeng. The transition to electric vehicles in Europe has gained momentum, with Volkswagen and Stellantis offering more affordable EV models to meet market demands and fend off Chinese rivals expanding globally.
Volkswagen, under the leadership of CEO Oliver Blume, acknowledges China’s pivotal role in shaping the industry. While Volkswagen’s partnership with Xpeng primarily targets the Chinese market, collaborations in Europe remain in the conceptual stage. The potential utilization of German plants by Chinese partners could pose regulatory risks for European automakers.
Despite Volkswagen’s self-sufficiency in China, the company remains open to future joint ventures in Europe. Analysts suggest that while Volkswagen focuses on partnerships in China, Stellantis’ successful alliance with Leapmotor is setting a benchmark in Europe. Acknowledging China’s influence, European automakers are embracing the role reversal where China now acts as a mentor to the industry.
