A mysterious figure emerges through a cloud of smoke, surprising all in his path! The nostalgic theme song was not misleading: the beloved ’90s animated series, Darkwing Duck, is making a comeback in a completely unexpected manner.
Disney+ has officially given the green light for a brand-new series, 35 years after the original show first aired. The revamped storyline introduces a twist: “Darkwing Duck finds himself trapped in an alternate reality where his heroic deeds are unknown. A spirited teenager named Duckie, well-versed in his past heroics, persuades this ego-driven vigilante to return to action.”
Although the plot is fresh, it was crafted in collaboration with Tad Stones, the creator of the original series. The new show will see the return of some iconic characters from the original franchise, voiced by renowned talents.
Mark Hamill will lend his voice to Drake Mallard, also known as Darkwing Duck, the fearless protector of St. Canard and the enigmatic “Terror that Flaps in the Night.”
The announcement of the reboot on Instagram sparked mixed reactions among fans, particularly those loyal to Jim Cummings, the original voice of the lead character. While some praised Mark Hamill’s talent, others emphasized Jim’s significant contribution to the character’s legacy.
The lead roles in the Darkwing Duck revival have been filled by a star-studded cast. Seth Rogen from Canada will voice the role of Darkwing’s absent-minded partner, Launchpad McQuack, while Lizzy Caplan takes on the role of his adopted daughter, Gosalyn Mallard. Additionally, Venezuelan American actor Lilimar Hernandez, known for her role in Inside Out 2, will portray the all-new character Duckie.
The original Darkwing Duck series premiered on the Disney Channel in 1991, running for 91 episodes and receiving an Emmy nomination. The crime-fighting duck also made appearances in Nintendo NES and Game Boy video games.
Rogen’s production company, Point Grey Pictures, behind the recent special installment of The Muppet Show on Disney+, will produce the new Darkwing Duck series. The Point Grey team enthusiastically embraced the character’s catchphrase, stating, “When Disney said, ‘Let’s get dangerous,’ we were all in.”
This exciting revival promises to bring back the nostalgia of the classic series while introducing new elements for both old and new fans to enjoy.
