Cineplex has announced the appointment of Bill Walker as its new CEO and disclosed plans for a potential sale. The company’s board is optimistic about its future but is exploring various options to enhance shareholder value. A Strategic Review has been initiated to evaluate opportunities for maximizing value, including the possibility of selling the company.
Goldman Sachs and TD Securities have been enlisted as co-financial advisers for the strategic review process. Cineplex, known as the largest cinema chain in Canada, operates over 1,600 movie screens in nearly 170 theaters nationwide and employs over 10,000 individuals in its entertainment venues.
In 2019, Cineplex faced a $2.8 billion buyout offer from Cineworld Group PLC, a deal that ultimately fell through. Ellis Jacob, the former CEO, will act as a special adviser to the board during the strategic review period. Phyllis Yaffe, the chair of Cineplex’s board, emphasized the company’s strong market position and leading entertainment assets, suggesting that the current market valuation may not fully reflect its business strength and future potential.
Bill Walker, previously at the helm of Landmark Cinemas, supported the strategic review and pledged to focus on operational excellence, exceptional guest experiences, and delivering superior outcomes for shareholders, regardless of the review’s outcome.
