In a tragic incident near Kyiv, the death toll from a Russian strike on a warehouse has reached 38, making it the deadliest attack of the year. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the toll, with four individuals still unaccounted for. The strike, which occurred on Friday night at an ammunition storage facility, triggered massive explosions and fires that engulfed numerous nearby homes and structures.
Rescue teams are diligently working to extinguish fires and locate and disarm explosive devices at the location in the village of Myla, as stated by Zelenskyy. He further disclosed that 20 individuals sustained injuries, including two children. Zelenskyy condemned the incident as a severe situation, attributing it to negligence in storing explosives near residential areas. An investigation is ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the presence of ammunition at the site.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Defence Ministry announced plans for significant strikes on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in retaliation for Ukrainian drone attacks on various targets, including a prominent retailer dubbed “Russia’s Amazon” and the nation’s oil and gas sector. The Kremlin spokesperson warned of an appropriate response to what was described as Ukraine’s escalatory actions and targeting of Russia’s civilian economy.
Ukraine has recently conducted strikes on Russian facilities, including the online retailer Wildberries, alleging the sale of items supporting Russia’s war efforts. Additionally, Ukraine’s new defense minister, Yevhen Khmara, outlined plans to address a significant funding gap inherited from his predecessor, emphasizing the need to secure additional support from partners. Khmara, a former special forces officer, highlighted the importance of maintaining operational resources for soldiers and meeting essential requirements amid mounting financial pressures on Ukraine’s military efforts.
In separate incidents, nearly 500 Ukrainian drones were reportedly intercepted or neutralized by Russian forces, with claims of strikes causing a fire at a major oil refinery in Russia. Tragic casualties were reported on both sides, including civilian deaths in Ukraine and Russia, underscoring the escalating tensions and human toll of the conflict.
