Rescue operations in regions affected by devastating flash floods near the Nepal-China border have extended into the fourth day, with authorities persistently discovering survivors and transferring them to safety. Families eagerly await news of their loved ones at relief centers, as the death toll and the count of missing individuals continue to escalate.

Chinese officials have confirmed seven fatalities and over 550 individuals missing, while Nepal’s disaster agency has reported a death toll of 669 with 2,426 people unaccounted for. In Nepal, over 3,700 individuals have been successfully rescued to date.

In Nuwakot, a district in Nepal severely impacted by the floods, helicopter operations resumed following adverse weather conditions that briefly impeded aerial rescue efforts. Helicopters were deployed to transport aid supplies like clothes, instant noodles, crackers, and rice to the affected areas, while also evacuating survivors.

Villagers in Trishuli, witnessing the destruction of their homes, began salvaging belongings as relief coordinators facilitated excavation activities. Among them, Shoba Shrestha reunited with her dog, Sweetie, whom she had to leave behind during the floods. In Kathmandu, relatives of missing individuals congregated at the main government hospital, desperately seeking information about their loved ones.

Families plastered hospital walls with posters of missing relatives, hoping for any lead to reunite with their kin. Gajendra Rawat, among many, searched fervently for his son’s name on the list of missing persons. Meanwhile, rescue teams battled challenging conditions to locate survivors in the disaster-stricken regions of Nepal and Tibet.

Efforts were focused on the Upper Trishuli-1 Hydropower Project in Rasuwa district, where rescuers encountered difficulties navigating through thick mud to reach trapped individuals. The formation of a new lake post-glacier collapse raised concerns of further flooding, prompting heightened vigilance among rescue teams.

Anita Anand, the Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister, confirmed the safe discovery of a previously missing Canadian individual, while 31 others remain unaccounted for. In China, the death toll climbed to seven, with hundreds reported missing, including foreign nationals visiting the region for various purposes.

Search-and-rescue operations persisted at the Gyirong Port checkpoint, a vital border crossing, with images showing rescuers employing various means to access the area. The death toll in Nepal surged to 626, with 2,426 individuals missing, while over 3,700 have been rescued. China’s state media highlighted evacuations and relief efforts as leaders directed the response to the calamity.
