Parts of British Columbia are facing significant drought conditions this summer. In Bessette Creek, water restrictions have been implemented to safeguard salmon populations from critically low water levels. Temporary protection orders for the Salmon River watershed were initially issued in July, temporarily lifted due to increased wildfire risks, and then reinstated in August.
Bob Crandall, treasurer of the Cowichan Lake Salmonid Enhancement Society, expressed concerns about the decreasing water levels in the 16 streams connected to Lake Cowichan that the society oversees. To mitigate the impact, the society conducts fry salvage operations, manually rescuing fish from drying rivers and relocating them to other water bodies.
Crandall emphasized the importance of human intervention in addressing ecological challenges caused by human activities. While these efforts are being hailed by communities in B.C., scientists caution that such interventions may have limitations and may not provide a sustainable long-term solution.
Collaborating with the Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation and volunteers, Crandall and his team focus on relocating various fish species to areas with more water. Climate change has made the task more challenging, with streams drying up further upstream than in previous years.
Utilizing aerators and nets, the team ensures the fish have sufficient oxygen during transportation. Crandall highlighted the physical challenges of moving water, fish, and equipment across dry streambeds, particularly in hot weather conditions.
The Ts’uubaa-asatx Nation plays a crucial role in fry salvage operations, using drones to identify drying streams. Michelle Corfield, the Nation’s lands and resource director, emphasized the cultural and ecological significance of salmon, stating the importance of preserving these resources for future generations.
In France, similar rescue efforts are facing constraints due to severe drought and extreme heat. Jean-Pierre Faure of the Fédération de Pêche du Rhône noted unprecedented weather events, leading to challenges in relocating fish. He emphasized the necessity of ecosystem restoration and water-use management over short-term interventions like rescue fishing.
Faure highlighted the physiological stress fish experience in warm water conditions, stressing the need for a holistic approach to conservation. He cautioned against large-scale fish relocation efforts, citing potential stress, costs, and logistical challenges when a vast majority of river systems are drying up.
