University of Waterloo doctoral student Kaveeshan Thurairajah recently achieved recognition in an unconventional manner. Instead of claiming a Nobel Prize, he and his fellow researchers were bestowed with an Ig Nobel Prize. These awards, a lighthearted parody of the prestigious Nobel Prizes, commend the most eccentric and innovative research endeavors within academia.
Thurairajah’s team clinched the Ig Nobel Physics Prize for their groundbreaking work on developing a urinal that prevents splashing. The moment Thurairajah learned of their victory from his supervisor, fluid physicist Zhao Pan, was a memorable one. Celebrating with a bottle of wine pulled from Pan’s office cupboard, they toasted their success in espresso cups.
The team experimented with various urinal prototypes, such as the Nautilus and Cornucopia designs, to identify the most effective and easy-to-maintain option. The Nautilus design emerged as the superior choice due to its reduced splash and enhanced cleanliness compared to the Cornucopia model.
Attending the awards ceremony in Zurich, Thurairajah and his colleagues, decked out in bright yellow raincoats, were prepared for accolades from their fellow unconventional scientists. Despite the humorous nature of their research, Thurairajah emphasized the practical value it holds in enhancing public spaces like bathrooms.
Apart from Thurairajah’s team, Canadian researchers from the University of Toronto and McGill University were also recognized at the event. Notable achievements included studying unethical behavior in upper-class individuals and innovating the use of mosquito proboscises for 3D printing.
The Ig Nobel awards, presented by Annals of Improbable Research, have recently relocated to Europe after decades in the United States. Thurairajah commended this decision, emphasizing the collaborative and international nature of the scientific community. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to celebrate with researchers from diverse backgrounds, underscoring the importance of global scientific collaboration.
