“Canada’s Heat-Related Deaths Data Challenges Climate Action”

A series of heat waves have swept through various parts of the country in mid-July. Northern and southern Ontario, Quebec, and even the Northwest Territories were placed under a heat alert on Tuesday. Downtown Toronto experienced scorching temperatures, hitting 36 C, making it the hottest spot in the nation, as per initial data from Environment and Climate Change Canada. Although temperatures are not expected to reach that peak again, the heat is forecasted to persist until Thursday.

Determining the exact number of deaths related to the heat is challenging in Canada due to the absence of a national coroner’s organization and a standardized reporting system for heat-related fatalities. Each province and territory operates its own system, leading to inconsistencies in counting heat-related deaths nationwide.

The lack of a unified approach poses challenges in accurately identifying deaths caused by heat versus other factors like underlying health conditions. Discrepancies in reporting methods can lead to varied interpretations of the cause of death by different coroners across the country.

Climate scientist Andrew Dessler points out the different ways of tallying heat-related deaths, including official death certificate numbers, excess death calculations, and regression methods based on temperature correlations. These discrepancies in reported numbers can be confusing for the public trying to comprehend the impact of extreme temperatures.

Studies suggest that heat waves are projected to become more frequent and prolonged in Canada due to climate change. As global temperatures rise from continued fossil fuel consumption, extreme weather events, including heat waves, are exacerbated.

Efforts to address heat-related deaths are outlined in the federal government’s National Adaptation Strategy, aiming to eliminate deaths from extreme heat waves by 2040. However, the accuracy of data collection remains a crucial factor in achieving this goal.

Following the 2021 heat-related deaths in British Columbia, significant changes were implemented, such as providing air conditioning to those in need, increased funding for long-term care facilities, and the establishment of a standardized heat alert system. Improved reporting practices based on accurate data have shown positive outcomes in mitigating heat-related risks.

The absence of consistent data on heat-related deaths is a global issue, as seen in the varying reports of excess heat-related fatalities during European heat waves. Experts stress the importance of implementing standardized measurement standards worldwide to better understand and address the impacts of heat-related illnesses and deaths amid escalating climate change challenges.
