Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw events, respectively, at the recent Diamond League event held in Chorzow, Poland. Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed spectators at the Silesian Stadium with a remarkable throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt, securing her position as the Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion.
Following closely behind Rogers, American athlete DeAnna Price claimed the second spot with a throw of 75.23 meters, while Italy’s Sara Fantini secured the third position with a throw of 71.95 meters.
Continuing the Canadian dominance in the hammer throw, Ethan Katzberg from Nanaimo, B.C., clinched the men’s event with a top throw of 82.92 meters, adding the Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games titles to his achievements. The event saw Germany’s Merlin Hummel finishing second with a throw of 81.25 meters, and Hungary’s Bence Halász securing the third spot with a throw of 79.44 meters.
In the men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse placed sixth with a time of 9.96 seconds at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland. The race was won by Jamaica’s Oblique Seville in a meeting-record time of 9.83 seconds, followed by United States’ Kenny Bednarek in second place with a season-best time of 9.87 seconds, and Christian Coleman from the United States finishing third in 9.93 seconds.
American sprinter Melissa Jefferson-Wooden triumphed in the women’s 100m event with a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Julien Alfred from Saint Lucia secured the second position with a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, while Sha’Carri Richardson from the United States, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medalist, finished third in 10.96 seconds.
Ethan Strand from the United States surprised everyone with a victory in the men’s 1,500m race, clocking a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan athlete Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech finished second in 3:31.14, followed by American Cole Hocker in third place with a time of 3:31.16. Norwegian distance-running star Jakob Ingebrigtsen claimed the fourth spot after recently returning from Achilles surgery.
The upcoming and final Diamond League meeting of the season is scheduled for August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, followed by the Diamond League Final in Brussels. The global track and field season will culminate with the World Athletics Ultimate Championship from September 11-13 in Budapest. Katzberg has secured a spot in the Ultimate Championship as the reigning Olympic and world champion in men’s hammer throw, while Rogers will not compete due to the absence of the women’s hammer throw event in the championship program.
