Duane (Keffe D) Davis revealed in a 2008 police interview that his nephew, Orlando (Baby Lane) Anderson, was the one who fired the fatal shots at rapper Tupac Shakur, as jurors learned on Thursday. Davis, who was allegedly involved in orchestrating the 1996 killing of the hip-hop star in Las Vegas, confessed to being in the car with Anderson during the incident. Despite his nephew being deceased for ten years at the time of the interview, Davis recounted the events that transpired.
According to Davis, he and Anderson, along with two other individuals, were in a white Cadillac that pulled up next to Shakur’s car, where the rapper was accompanied by Marion (Suge) Knight. Davis mentioned that had the positioning been different, he would have fired the shots himself, but due to Knight’s location, he passed the gun to Deandre “Big Dre” Smith, who declined to take it. Subsequently, Anderson took the weapon and carried out the shooting, as detailed in the audio recording presented to the jurors.
This was the first instance where Davis openly discussed his role in the shooting with authorities, a crucial piece of evidence in the case against the 63-year-old defendant. Prosecutors emphasized their reliance on Davis’s own admissions during police interviews, podcasts, and his 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.” Despite previously suggesting that Knight or Sean (Diddy) Combs may have been involved in Shakur’s shooting, Davis now finds himself at the center of the trial.
Maintaining his innocence, Davis pleaded not guilty, with his attorney dismissing the prosecution’s version of events as fictitious. The attorney argued that Davis’s accounts lacked substantiation and that investigators overlooked key evidence. Initially brought in for questioning regarding the 1997 shooting of Shakur’s rival, the Notorious B.I.G., Davis was ultimately cleared of involvement in that case.
Prosecutors contended that Davis breached confidentiality by publicly discussing the shooting in various forums over the years, thereby annulling any prior agreements with law enforcement. The motive for Shakur’s murder, according to prosecutors, stemmed from an earlier altercation where Shakur’s associates had allegedly assaulted Anderson, leading to a revenge-driven attack on the rapper.
