Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has given $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library after learning that five branches faced permanent closure. Reid explained her decision, stating, “I had to do it because I don’t know what the point is of being a successful author in Nova Scotia if you’re not going to use it for good.”

The library recently decided to use $80,000 from its reserve funds to keep the five branches open until the end of September. Despite receiving partial funding from municipalities, there was still over $200,000 needed to sustain the branches.

In response to Reid’s donation, the library expressed deep gratitude, calling it one of the most significant private gifts in its history. CEO Julia Merritt praised Reid for investing in libraries and the community they serve, stating, “Her support will make a meaningful difference and help us continue creating opportunities for people to read, learn, and connect.”

Reid emphasized the importance of properly funding libraries as essential services, noting that they played a crucial role in her journey to becoming a successful author. She recalled her childhood spent at a local library in Bedford, Nova Scotia, where her love for books and writing was nurtured.

While the library acknowledged the importance of private donations, they stressed the ongoing need for stable public funding to sustain library services. Reid hoped her contribution would raise awareness about funding challenges faced by public libraries.

The library plans to collaborate with Reid on a special public event celebrating libraries, reading, and community next month. More details about the event will be announced soon. Reid expressed her commitment to supporting her community and addressing government decisions that impact Nova Scotia’s appeal.
