The latest government data released on Sunday revealed that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has claimed the lives of 2,325 individuals, making it the deadliest outbreak in the nation’s history, surpassing the toll of the 2018-2020 outbreak. The country’s public health institute reported a total of 4,945 confirmed cases, including 101 new cases detected within the previous 24 hours.
This outbreak, classified as the 17th in the country, has already set a record in terms of the highest number of cases recorded in late July. The total death toll has now exceeded the 2,299 deaths recorded during the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak, which was previously the most severe in the country’s history. The current outbreak, caused by the Bundibugyo species of Ebola, lacks approved vaccines or treatments.
The escalating outbreak, declared on May 15, is attributed to weak health infrastructure, community resistance, and instability, hindering effective case identification and response efforts. The case fatality ratio has surged from about 20% in early June to 46%, indicating that nearly half of the confirmed cases are now fatal. However, experts clarify that this rise does not signify an increased lethality of the virus but rather persistent deficiencies in surveillance, case detection, and access to care.
The outbreak, which has spread to neighboring Uganda, was swiftly contained there with two deaths and 20 confirmed cases before being declared over last month. Ebola transmission occurs through direct contact with infected individuals’ bodily fluids, leading to symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and potentially fatal internal and external bleeding.
Despite ongoing evaluations of experimental vaccines and therapies, the availability of effective treatments remains a critical challenge in combating the outbreak. Global health authorities are exploring existing Ebola treatments for potential protective benefits, although conclusive evidence is currently limited to animal studies.
