An outburst of jubilation filled Canada Life Centre on Saturday evening when Simon Hildebrandt, a resident of Winnipeg, made a remarkable three-point shot. This shot secured the Winnipeg Sea Bears their inaugural Canadian Elite Basketball League championship. The crowd erupted into cheers, confetti filled the air, and Queen’s “We Are The Champions” resonated through the speakers as fans and players rejoiced in the team’s 98-84 victory.
Reflecting on his winning shot, Hildebrandt described the moment as unexpected and surreal, mentioning that his mind went blank before the celebrations began. This victory marked Winnipeg’s fourth season in the CEBL, with the team’s journey starting in 2023, where the late Chad Posthumus, also a Winnipeg native, scored the game-winning basket in their debut.
Hildebrandt acknowledged the significance of following in Posthumus’s footsteps, emphasizing the impact the former player had on the team and the city. He recalled the special moment when Posthumus hit the first game-winning shot and expressed his gratitude for being able to emulate that achievement in the championship game.
Head coach Mike Raimbault, who also leads the University of Winnipeg’s men’s basketball team, shared a touching moment with Posthumus’s parents during the postgame celebrations, highlighting the deep connection the team holds with the late player.
Despite facing challenges with key players being sidelined, such as Teddy Allen and the departure of Emmanuel Akot and Jeremiah Tilmon Jr., the Sea Bears overcame these obstacles to secure victories over the Saskatchewan Mamba and Vancouver Bandits in the playoffs. The championship match against the Brampton Honey Badgers was initially planned as a best-of-three series but was condensed into a single game due to court conditions, eventually leading to the Sea Bears’ triumphant victory.
Xavier Moon, who delivered an outstanding performance with 29 points in the final game, was named the CEBL’s finals MVP, underscoring the team’s perseverance and determination. Moon, a three-time league MVP, expressed the significance of winning the title in a city that had never before won a playoff game, emphasizing the value of this victory over his previous accomplishments.
In addition to the championship win, the Sea Bears set a new single-game attendance record, attracting 12,519 fans to Canada Life Centre. Owner David Asper acknowledged the community’s support and the validation of the team’s hard work through this record-breaking attendance.
Looking ahead, Hildebrandt hopes that young basketball players in Winnipeg draw inspiration from the Sea Bears’ success, showcasing that with dedication and perseverance, they too can achieve greatness on the national stage.
