Residents of approximately 2,400 households near the Quilpituk Creek wildfire zone in the Central Okanagan region received positive news on Friday. Evacuation orders for properties spanning from Cinnabar Creek to Westshore Estates were downgraded to alerts, allowing people to return home. The controlled re-entry process was implemented to avoid traffic congestion.
The B.C. Wildfire Service reported that the fire was “being held,” indicating no further growth was anticipated. Thankfully, no structures have been destroyed by the fire, which has been active for about two weeks and covers over 1,200 hectares. However, challenges persist, with properties and roadways likely covered in ash, soot, smoke residue, and debris.
Kari O’Rourke from the Regional District of Central Okanagan advised returning residents to bring potable water and cleaning supplies for self-sufficiency for at least 72 hours. James Britton, a resident at La Casa Lakeside Resort, shared his experience of returning home after multiple evacuations in recent years. Despite the challenges, Britton highlighted the community’s resilience and support for one another.
While some evacuees have been allowed to return home, evacuation alerts are still active, urging residents to remain prepared to evacuate immediately if conditions worsen. Summerland Mayor Doug Holmes mentioned that gradual re-entry of affected neighborhoods is planned, with Peachland evacuees set to return home from 6 p.m. PT on Friday.
