A prominent far-right figure from Austria, known for his extremist views, expressed his desire to receive entry to Canada for an upcoming speaking engagement in Hamilton. Martin Sellner, who was permanently banned from the UK in 2019 due to security concerns, is slated to be a key speaker at a Dominion Society conference on August 29. The Dominion Society advocates for “remigration,” the mass expulsion of immigrants.

Sellner faced travel permit cancellations in the US and a three-year entry ban in Germany. Despite Sellner’s controversial background, Canadian authorities have not disclosed whether he will be allowed into the country. The Canadian government emphasized that individuals seeking entry must meet the requirements outlined in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, which includes being deemed admissible based on various factors such as involvement in violence, terrorism, or organized crime.

In response to promotion by the Dominion Society, Sellner expressed hope for entry into Canada. Ameil Joseph, an anti-racism scholar in Hamilton, suggested that Canada should consider restricting Sellner’s access given his track record. Hamilton Mayor Andrea Horwath has informed local venue owners about the Dominion Society’s beliefs, emphasizing the city’s stance against hate, racism, and discrimination.

The Dominion Society’s website advocates for the “great replacement” conspiracy theory, claiming that Canada is becoming less diverse and more Indian due to mass immigration. The group supports deporting various groups, including temporary foreign workers, permanent residents, and even Canadian citizens born to non-Canadian parents.

Experts warn that white supremacist groups exploit economic anxieties to push their agendas. Daniel Tyrie, chair of the Dominion Society, defended Sellner’s potential visit to Canada, decrying any attempts to stop him as political persecution. However, critics argue that such groups, including the Dominion Society, aim to advance their extremist views in a subtle manner to align with mainstream discourse.

Overall, concerns persist about the rise of white nationalist sentiments in Hamilton and the potential influence of groups like the Dominion Society. Experts stress the need to address underlying economic anxieties that these groups exploit to promote divisive narratives.
