Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances at the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, Calif. Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100m butterfly and later added a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team, bringing her total medal count to five. McIntosh, on the other hand, faced disappointment after winning the B final of the women’s 400m freestyle but failing to qualify for the A final due to a misjudgment.
Ruck, hailing from Kelowna, B.C., clocked a personal-best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, coming in second behind American Gretchen Walsh. Meanwhile, Australian Alexandria Perkins claimed the bronze with a time of 56.75 seconds. Ruck expressed her satisfaction with her performance, emphasizing the importance of rest and trust in her body.
In contrast, McIntosh expressed frustration and disappointment for missing the women’s 400m freestyle final after a misjudgment during the morning heats. She took full responsibility for the error, vowing to learn from it and ensure it doesn’t happen again. McIntosh, who is the world-record holder in the women’s 200m freestyle, rebounded with a gold in the 400m individual medley.
On the men’s side, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke. Tierney, from Toronto, won silver in 1:56.29, with Ekk finishing third in 1:56.85. Tierney, who also won gold in the men’s 100m backstroke, credited his success to dedicated training.
Ruck continued her impressive performance by leading Canada to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay alongside teammates Mary-Sophie Harvey, Leah Tigert, and Leilani Fack. The U.S. clinched gold in the event, followed by Australia with silver. Unfortunately, the Canadian men’s 4x100m freestyle team narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth.
The championships showcased a mix of triumphs and setbacks for the Canadian swimmers, highlighting the competitive spirit and determination in the pool.
