Caitlyn Moony, a newcomer to Vancouver from Johannesburg, reflects on her initial expectations and subsequent experiences in the city. Moony, having previously worked as a social researcher in South Africa, sought new opportunities in Vancouver, drawn by the city’s allure and the presence of family members. Despite envisioning an idyllic life in Vancouver, Moony found herself grappling with challenges, including job search difficulties and feelings of isolation in a city where she lacked a sense of community. The initial excitement of living in Vancouver faded as the realities of everyday life set in, leading Moony to eventually leave for London in search of a more vibrant and bustling environment.

However, London’s bustling atmosphere did not fully satisfy Moony, who felt like a tourist in a city she once called home. Reflecting on her time in Vancouver and the personal growth it brought, Moony realized that the city had quietly shaped her into a more introspective and grounded individual. Despite its imperfections, including the infamous wet dog smell during rainy seasons, Moony found herself yearning to return to Vancouver, seeking solace in the city’s familiar charm and the opportunity to reconnect with its essence. As she landed back in Vancouver amidst a winter storm, Moony pondered the possibility of reconciling with the city that had challenged and ultimately nurtured her.

Moony’s journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of adapting to new environments and finding belonging in unexpected places. Her introspective narrative sheds light on the complexities of settling in a new city and the profound impact it can have on one’s sense of self.
