Starbucks is making changes to its rewards program, requiring customers to spend more to earn freebies. Customers earn ten stars for every £1 spent at Starbucks, which can be accumulated to redeem free drinks or food. The number of stars needed for a free filter coffee, americano, or hot tea is increasing from 130 to 150 stars starting September 3. This translates to spending £13 for 130 stars and £15 for 150 stars.

The required stars for bakery items, such as croissants, cookies, and muffins, are increasing from 300 to 350 stars, with the spending equivalent rising from £30 to £35. Similarly, to obtain a free handcrafted beverage like lattes, mochas, and frappuccinos, the star requirement is increasing from 500 to 600, meaning customers will now need to spend £60 instead of £50.

For selected merchandise like mugs and cups, the star threshold is moving up from 1,000 to 1,150 stars, resulting in an increase in spending from £100 to £115 to redeem these items. Starbucks communicated to customers via email that these changes are aimed at ensuring the rewards program continues to provide value, with ongoing investments in additional member benefits.

Starbucks is maintaining the criteria for its “Gold Level” membership, which requires collecting 2,500 stars, equivalent to a £250 spend. Achieving “Gold Level” unlocks more freebies, including a complimentary birthday drink. Customers can track their points through the Starbucks app.

A Starbucks spokesperson mentioned that while the number of stars required to redeem certain rewards will be updated from September 3, there will be no changes to how stars are earned, existing balances, or Gold Member qualifications. The company is committed to enhancing the rewards program and plans to introduce more member benefits in the future.

In other news, Starbucks is bringing its viral Unicorn Frappuccino to the UK for a limited time. This colorful drink, which gained fame in the US, features peach and mango flavors with a blue raspberry drizzle, topped with whipped cream and pink and blue sprinkles. Available from August 15 to 17, the Unicorn Frappuccino starts at £5.60 for a Tall size and will be accompanied by a cake pop priced at £3.30.
