Billionaire entrepreneur Mike Ashley has expressed interest in acquiring the upscale department store Harvey Nichols, stating that the business is facing significant challenges and is on a downward trajectory. Known for purchasing struggling retailers, Ashley is eyeing Harvey Nichols following its owner’s decision to put the store up for sale. The luxury retailer, prominently featured in the popular BBC sitcom “Absolutely Fabulous,” has been experiencing financial losses in recent years.

Apart from its renowned flagship store in London’s Knightsbridge, Harvey Nichols has locations in Leeds, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Manchester, Dublin, and Bristol. The store underwent a significant restructuring two years ago, resulting in numerous job cuts at its head office.

Mike Ashley’s Frasers Group, along with fashion giant Next, is reportedly among the potential buyers for Harvey Nichols. In an interview with the Financial Times, Ashley hinted that he anticipates the sale price to be under £40 million. He expressed confidence in his company’s ability to handle the challenges ahead and mentioned potential rebranding strategies for some of Harvey Nichols’ stores under the House of Fraser or Flannels labels, both owned by Frasers.

Reflecting on his past acquisition of House of Fraser, where the number of stores has significantly decreased since 2018, Ashley emphasized the financial complexities of maintaining department store properties. He asserted his commitment to sustainable business practices, emphasizing that closures are not his primary objective.

In addition to his interest in Harvey Nichols, Ashley’s business portfolio includes Lillywhites, the iconic sports store in London’s Piccadilly Circus, which he acquired in 2002.
