Eerie photos reveal the nearly empty crocodile enclosure where a three-year-old boy sustained severe injuries earlier this summer. While many families visited the Johnsons of Old Hurst zoo in Cambs during peak school holiday times, only a handful explored the Tropical House where the incident occurred.
A witness, who spent ten minutes in the house, observed minimal foot traffic, with just one adult and a young child present, while families with strollers bypassed the area. Inside, typically bustling walkways with safety barriers were deserted, creating a quiet and solemn ambiance. Warning signs both inside and outside the Tropical House emphasize the need for children to be supervised at all times and caution against carrying them on shoulders or handrails.
The Tropical House hosts various crocodile species like Nile, Saltwater, and Siamese. Despite the subdued atmosphere within the enclosure, the rest of the zoo, featuring amenities like a steakhouse, tea room, and shop, bustled with families during the school break.
Authorities responded to an incident on June 18 at the family-operated zoo involving the three-year-old boy’s entry into the crocodile enclosure. A 30-year-old man, suspected to have learning challenges and under care supervision, was apprehended but later released due to his inability to be interviewed.
Tracey Johnson, the 55-year-old owner, demonstrated heroism by swiftly rescuing the boy from the crocodile pen, despite the presence of large Nile crocodiles. The boy, now in stable condition, has been receiving treatment at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge for approximately six weeks.
Following the incident, the boy underwent a nerve graft on his left arm to aid in restoring hand function. Additionally, he endured a lengthy surgery addressing severe tissue damage to his arms, neck, head, and face.
Expressing relief and gratitude, the boy’s family shared updates on his progress, highlighting his communication with nurses, playfulness using his feet, and his joyful demeanor. Norfolk County Council initiated an inquiry under the Care Act 2014 to safeguard individuals with care needs from abuse or neglect.
