Ukraine relies on the US-made MIM-104 Patriot air defense system to counter ballistic missile threats. However, the recent onslaught of 24 ballistic missiles, 115 drones, and four anti-ship missiles overwhelmed the defense system, resulting in significant damage and casualties.
Despite the challenges, Kyiv’s defense forces managed to intercept 98 drones, but the deliberate targeting of civilians by Russia raised concerns about the escalating conflict. The city was left in chaos, with reports of damaged warehouses and residential buildings.
Ukraine’s ambassador to the European Union, Katarina Mathernova, described the harrowing situation, highlighting the relentless attacks by Russia and the ongoing rescue efforts to save trapped individuals from the rubble.

Amidst the chaos, Ukraine’s plea for additional Patriot interceptors to counter Russian aggression has been met with challenges. The US President’s initial offer to allow Ukraine to produce the interceptors was later retracted, citing concerns about technology transfer and weapon capabilities.
