Andy Burnham has voiced his support for The Mirror’s water safety initiative following a series of tragic drownings that claimed numerous lives. The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the risks associated with open water swimming, especially during periods of extreme heat. Since May 24, a total of 40 individuals have tragically perished in water-related incidents across the UK.

Mr. Burnham has endorsed The Mirror’s campaign, established in memory of Sam Haycock, a 16-year-old who drowned in a reservoir in South Yorkshire in 2021. He commended the newspaper for its advocacy on water safety and highlighted the need for greater understanding of the dangers posed by open water swimming, particularly for non-regular swimmers.

The campaign, supported by bereaved families, lifesaving charities, and notable figures like Olympic champions Becky Adlington and Tom Dean, aims to elevate drowning prevention to a national emergency. One of the key calls is for the introduction of ‘Sam’s Law,’ mandating the installation of safety equipment around high-risk bodies of water.

In response to the campaign, Sam’s father, Simon Haycock, expressed optimism about Mr. Burnham’s endorsement, emphasizing the urgency of sustained efforts to address the ongoing water safety crisis. Vanessa Abbess, campaigning in memory of her son Joe, who drowned in 2023, echoed the significance of water safety education and urged prompt action to appoint a dedicated Water Safety Minister.

Furthermore, the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS UK) welcomed the Prime Minister’s support for the campaign, highlighting the critical need for enhanced water safety education and prevention measures. RLSS UK emphasized the preventable nature of drowning and called for increased funding for swimming and water safety education in schools across England.

The collective efforts of families, organizations, and public figures underscore the pressing need for comprehensive action to prevent further water-related tragedies and promote a culture of water safety awareness and education.
