Britons planning to travel abroad this summer are being cautioned against purchasing potentially hazardous travel adaptors that pose risks of electric shocks or even electrocution.
A recent assessment by Electrical Safety First revealed that 14 travel adaptors sourced from platforms like Ali Express, eBay, Amazon Marketplace, and TikTok Shop failed basic safety evaluations. The organization highlighted that over 10,000 of these unsafe adaptors may have already been distributed to consumers unknowingly.
During the inspection of various travel adaptors, it was discovered that multiple units had exposed live plug pins simultaneously, creating a grave safety hazard, especially if touched with wet hands. Additionally, some adaptors were found to have plug pins that could break off inside sockets, lacked safety features like shutters or fuses, or had oversized plug pin holes, increasing the likelihood of contact with live electrical components.
Giuseppe Capanna, a product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First, emphasized the importance of scrutinizing purchases to avoid endangering oneself. He urged British travelers to exercise caution when buying travel adaptors and to opt for reputable retailers to ensure safety while traveling.
Following the findings, AliExpress, eBay, Amazon, and TikTok promptly took action to remove the flagged listings. Representatives from these platforms affirmed their commitment to consumer safety by addressing the identified issues promptly.
Andrew McConnell, spokesperson for the UK Civil Aviation Authority, echoed the sentiment of vigilance when acquiring electrical items for travel, emphasizing the significance of choosing trusted products to mitigate safety risks during holidays.
