Convicted child abuser George Gibney has been labeled a “monster” by his victims who accused him of exploiting his role as a swimming coach to target young girls, as revealed in a Dublin court. The former Irish Olympic swimming coach was convicted of indecently assaulting four girls and attempting to rape a 12-year-old girl in a changing room. Victim impact statements presented at Dublin’s Central Criminal Court described the trauma endured by the victims, one of whom carried the abuse in silence for years while watching Gibney receive praise and admiration.

Another victim expressed the traumatic nature of the legal proceedings and criticized the graphic media coverage. Gibney, aged 78, admitted to five counts of indecent assault in 1976 but denied numerous other charges spanning from 1971 to 1981. Following a recent trial, he was found guilty of 40 charges related to incidents in the 1970s and 1980s. Gibney’s lawyer confirmed in court that he would not contest the convictions, acknowledging his tarnished reputation and declining health.

During the victim impact statements, the women thanked the authorities for their support. One woman addressed Gibney directly, seeking to document his “evilness” officially. She expressed relief at speaking out and exposing his misconduct, despite the emotional toll. Another victim highlighted the exhausting court process and its impact on her well-being. She criticized the legal system for its lack of empathy towards victims and expressed anger over the ordeal’s effects on her life and relationships.

The victims recounted the lasting trauma inflicted by Gibney, the media, and the legal system, emphasizing the need for reform. They revealed the emotional toll, nightmares, and desperation they experienced, crediting the authorities for providing a sense of safety and support. Gibney’s lawyer acknowledged his client’s lack of prior convictions but emphasized the profound change in character between the perpetrator and the present-day individual. Gibney is scheduled to be sentenced on October 12.
