Make perfect air fryer hot cross buns every time with £1 secret ingredient

Published:

Everyone loves a good hot cross bun as an Easter treat. But there’s a way to make them as tasty and as simple as ever. And that’s turning to your air fryer to do all the work, while adding a spruce of cinnamon.

Air fryers are a game changer, and almost any recipe can be done in less time than traditional methods. Hot cross buns are a sweet type of bread bun, typically topped up with raisins or other fruits. It comes marked with a cross on top, hence its name. It’s a popular Easter treat in the UK and other Commonwealth countries. They are easy to make in an air fryer and the perfect Easter treat, all thanks to Simply Delicious’ recipe.

While this recipe isn’t a 10 minute job, it still takes less than an hour, with cinnamon tipped as being the little known ingredient to give your hot cross buns that sweet elevation.

Ingredients:

Firstly, combine the warm water with the butter. Once melted, add the milk and sugar to the bowl of a stand mixed fitted with a dough hook attachment. Then, add all of the ingredients and let them combine for a minute until the dough becomes sticky.

Add the raisins and knead for another two minutes until it becomes a soft, tacky dough. Cover it with plastic wrap and a damp tea towel, allowing the dough to rest for about an hour. Alternatively, you can keep them in the fridge overnight and bake them in the morning before service for a fresher and warmer taste.

If you don’t own a stand mixer, it can also be done by hand. Simply combine all of the ingredients into one large bowl and mix it well until a soft dough forms.

Pre-heat the air fryer to 180C. Once the dough is ready, place it on a lightly floured surface and cut it into 16 squares. Make a dough ball and place it in a greased baking dish that will fit in the air fryer basket.

Depending on the size of the air fryer basket, you will have to split it into different batches. Cover again for 30 minutes until it rises. Once the air fryer has been heated, bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.

Ready to go, add the brushed sugar syrup mixture and allow it to cool down for 10 minutes before serving, adding the toppings. Don’t forget the cinnamon!

To make the famous cross, mix flour and water until a thick paste is formed. Then, put the mixture into a piping bag and make the cross mark in each bun.

Whether you’re spending quality time with your family and friends, it’s a simple and straightforward recipe and a perfect activity for the Easter holidays.
