Millions of individuals may face an extension of hosepipe bans this summer, as highlighted by the latest information. The National Drought Group (NDG) has expressed concerns over the escalating situation in various regions of southern, central, and eastern England. Notably, seven major water companies, including Thames Water, Southern Water, and Southeast Water, have already implemented restrictions due to prolonged dry spells without any rainfall.

The NDG has identified several areas that are on the verge of official drought status, characterized by “prolonged dry weather.” These regions, numbering 13 in total, encompass territories served by different water providers such as Affinity Water, SES Water, and Wessex Water. Consequently, there is a possibility of millions more people coming under hosepipe bans. Presently, temporary restrictions affect approximately 23 million customers across the UK, a measure aimed at safeguarding the environment and alleviating pressure on essential water systems.

The absence of rainfall continues to be a pressing issue, with central and southeastern England experiencing a 14-day period without any recorded precipitation, the longest streak since 1997. Helen Wakeham, Chair of the NDG and Director of Water at the Environment Agency, emphasized the profound impact of this dry spell on various sectors, including agriculture and wildlife.

Looking ahead, the forecast indicates that high-pressure systems will persist for the next few days, limiting rainfall to coastal areas and parts of southeast England. Despite some potential showers in mid-week, the overall outlook suggests predominantly settled conditions across the UK. Water companies like Affinity Water and Thames Water have already enforced Temporary Use Bans (TUB), restricting hosepipe usage to conserve water resources.

The implementation of such bans is crucial for drought management, considering that a single hosepipe can consume up to 1,000 liters of water per hour, exceeding the daily usage of a typical family. David Henderson, Chief Executive of Water UK, acknowledged the challenges posed by surging water demand following record-breaking temperatures in recent months.
