Ryanair’s CEO, Michael O’Leary, addressed an incident on a flight operated by the airline’s subsidiary, Malta Air, where a passenger was reportedly affected by a shattered window mid-flight. O’Leary clarified that the passenger was not sucked out of the aircraft but described the unsettling experience of the window shattering, oxygen masks deploying, and the pilots adjusting the altitude to ensure safety for all onboard.
The passenger involved, Ljubisa Karović, a 61-year-old from Serbia, was on flight FR1879 from Greece to Germany when the window shattered, causing objects to fly out and passengers to struggle to keep him in place. Karović sustained injuries to his right arm, including burns and bruises, and recounted the terrifying experience of the explosion and chaos that ensued.
Despite claims of being partially sucked out of the window, Karović managed to stay inside the aircraft with the help of fellow passengers. His wife, Svetlana Grković, who witnessed the incident from a few rows back, described how passengers came together to assist and even used items like a bag and suitcase to block the opening.
Following the landing, Karović was promptly taken to the hospital for treatment, but he continues to endure pain from the ordeal. His lawyer, Vasilis Tsiaras, emphasized the miraculous nature of Karović’s survival, highlighting the grave danger he faced during the cabin pressure loss.
Ryanair’s O’Leary acknowledged the legal implications of the incident, mentioning the increasing number of claims being made and assuring that the airline will address them accordingly. The aftermath of the event remains a topic of ongoing investigation and legal action.
