The UK has decided to evacuate its remaining diplomatic personnel from Iran amid growing tensions in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the US has conducted airstrikes on Iran for the 12th consecutive night in the latest round of conflict between the two countries.

A statement from the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) on July 22 cited security concerns as the reason for the temporary withdrawal of UK staff from Iran. Despite the evacuation, the UK embassy is still operational remotely.

The FCDO has issued a travel advisory, advising against all travel to Iran. British nationals currently in Iran are urged to assess the risks of staying there, as there is a significant risk of arrest, questioning, or detention, especially for British and British-Iranian dual nationals.

Tensions in the region escalated following joint US and Israel strikes on key Iranian sites in February, prompting Iran to retaliate by targeting sites across the region and closing the Strait of Hormuz. Although a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the US and Iran on June 17 to end the conflict within 60 days, efforts to achieve lasting peace have failed, leading to renewed hostilities.

In a separate development on the same day, the US and Saudi Arabia signed a significant agreement allowing the kingdom to develop a civilian nuclear program. Described as a “peaceful nuclear cooperation agreement,” the deal is expected to grant American companies access to the Saudi nuclear energy sector, potentially enabling Saudi Arabia to enrich uranium for power generation or weapon development in the future.

US President Donald Trump has emphasized the US stance on preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons as a key objective in the ongoing conflict.
