A father shared his harrowing experience of nearly losing his and his son’s lives while trapped in beach mud. Thanks to his zoologist training in rainforests, they managed to survive the ordeal. James Downs, 47, and his 11-year-old son Oliver, avid anglers, found themselves sinking in soft mud up to their chests while digging for bait as the tide rose beneath them. James feared for their lives as attempts to call for help went unnoticed by unaware beachgoers.

Reflecting on the incident, James emphasized the importance of teaching children how to swim to prevent similar tragedies. This plea coincides with The Mirror’s Save Lives for Sam campaign, aiming to prevent water-related fatalities, especially during heatwaves. The UK witnessed 19 deaths in water-related incidents in just one week during a recent heatwave.

Fortunately, James utilized his zoologist skills and a bait pump as a probe to navigate through the mud to safety at St Mary’s Bay in Kent. Recalling his training in Australian rainforests, he and his son made the perilous 120-meter journey to shore. Despite the physical strain, James managed to pull through, emphasizing the adrenaline-fueled effort it took to save his son.

Following the incident, additional warning signs have been installed in coastal areas to alert visitors of the dangers of soft mud and sand. Authorities stress the importance of beach safety and urge visitors to heed safety guidance and be cautious while exploring such areas. In emergencies, individuals are advised to call 999 for the coastguard.

The RNLI commended James and Oliver for their survival and highlighted the importance of seeking immediate help in water-related emergencies. They emphasized the coordination of maritime search and rescue efforts by HM Coastguard to ensure timely assistance. While tragic incidents like these serve as sober reminders of the risks involved, prompt action and awareness can prevent further casualties.
