A man aged 33, identified as Jesus Lato Garzon from Watford, tragically passed away following a fall from a hot air balloon last week. The incident occurred around 9:20 AM on September 19 near Newpound Common in Wisborough Green, West Sussex. Despite an extensive search involving drones, officers, and K-9 units, Sussex Police located his body in a nearby field.
Garzon was one of 16 passengers and a pilot on a Virgin Balloon Flight traveling from Billingshurst, West Sussex, to Dunsfold, Surrey. The flight was part of a purchased experience. An inquest into his death is scheduled to commence at West Sussex Coroner’s Court on September 30, with the family duly notified.
Virgin Balloon Flights, which offers excursions over the North and South Downs from its contingency site in Dunsfold, expressed deep sorrow over the incident. Detective Sergeant Elaine Keating remarked on the tragedy, extending condolences to the affected family and passengers. The death is deemed non-suspicious, with an investigation underway for the coroner’s office.
A spokesperson from Virgin Balloon Flights emphasized their sympathy for the family’s loss and the well-being of all involved passengers. They requested privacy to be respected during this challenging period to prioritize the safety and peace of mind of passengers and the public.
