Two individuals have lost their lives, and five others have reportedly sustained gunshot injuries following a shooting incident at a street festival in the western part of Toronto on the evening of July 11. The perpetrator, an active shooter, is still at large, prompting emergency responders to investigate the events at a well-established Latino-themed cultural festival in Ontario’s provincial capital.
According to Toronto Police representative Shannon Eames, two individuals have died, and five have been wounded by gunfire near St. Clair Avenue West and Arlington Avenue during the ongoing Salsa on St. Clair Festival. Emergency services were called to the scene at the annual festival shortly after 8 pm.
With the shooter still on the loose, law enforcement has issued a warning to the public, advising vigilance as authorities strive to capture the perpetrator or perpetrators. A significant police presence remains in the vicinity near the festival. Ontario Premier Doug Ford has denounced the “senseless violence” at the event, confirming that two lives were lost and others were injured. He emphasized the necessity of apprehending the responsible individual, ensuring justice is served, and advocating for a life sentence in his statement.
Ford expressed gratitude towards the first responders in attendance and extended sympathies to the victims, their families, and all those impacted by the tragedy. Toronto, home to 3.2 million residents, is not only Canada’s largest city but also considered one of the safest metropolises in North America.
Canada experiences few fatal mass shootings in contrast to the United States, where gun violence rates are significantly higher. The USA records over 40,000 firearm-related deaths annually, while Canada typically reports fewer than 300 such incidents. Canada strictly regulates gun ownership through licensing requirements, mandatory safety training, and thorough background checks.
