A group of British expatriates narrowly escaped a deadly wildfire in Spain that has tragically taken the lives of at least twelve individuals. Among the victims were four Britons, and as the search continues for 23 missing persons, fears persist that the death toll may rise further.

Richard Walker, a former West Yorkshire firefighter, recounted the harrowing experience of witnessing the rapid spread of the flames near his residence in Bedar. Urged by a friend, he swiftly evacuated with his girlfriend, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. They managed to rescue two teenagers from a neighboring property just in time before the flames engulfed the area.

Another expatriate, Jackie Handscombe, described the terrifying sight of the approaching inferno and the urgency to flee the area with her partner. The Guardia Civil has closed off access to the affected mountain regions, instructing residents and tourists to evacuate immediately. Helicopters are actively dousing the remaining smoldering areas with water to contain the fire.

Paul Thompson, another evacuee, shared his experience of abandoning his holiday villa amidst the encroaching flames, leaving behind all possessions except for the clothes on his back. The extent of the destruction caused by the fire spans over 6,600 hectares, with authorities attributing the incident to a fallen power line, although local power companies dispute this claim.

Despite the tragic loss of life, authorities are optimistic as improved weather conditions allow for a more direct approach in battling the raging wildfire. Antonio Sanz, Andalusia’s health and emergencies minister, expressed hope for a more proactive stance against the fire, acknowledging the challenges faced in combating the complex and fast-moving blaze.
